Seems like these days looking through supplements and vitamins is more like taking an advanced Biology class.
Ingredient lists that sound like they are from a sci-fi movie than something that you would want to put in your body.
L-citrulline, agmatine, Beta-alanine, Alpha GPC + Rhodiola?
Seriously, what is androgynous caffeine?
I don’t want to spend every hour outside of the gym doing groundbreaking scientific research into what exactly in my supplements.
The biggest offender of complicated ingredient mixtures is pre-workout. For the most part, these concoctions contain creatine. So here is a shortcut to help you to break through that plateau on your bench max. There is a whole body of research that covers the positive effects of pre-workout on peak power performance, feelings of energy, and fatigue. Even better these studies are done by some heavy hitters in the scientific community. The Mayo Clinic and Journal of Sports Science and Medicine to name two.
Normally, shortcuts are to be avoided at all costs in the world of lifting, but this is more of a simplification of understanding than it is slapping on weight too quickly.
One of these mysterious ingredients that show up in just about every new science experiment parading around as a pre workout is creatine. This stuff occurs naturally in your vertebrates, the bones in your back, and assists in the recycling of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and keeping acid levels (pH) in your muscles lower.
Sounds good right?
Well, the reviews on creatine are mixed. This is mostly because of the effects this stuff has on your kidneys, liver, and brain tissues. Not exactly the parts of your body that you want to mess up…
The 10 best pre-workout without creatine
Here is a short list of pre-workout without creatine for those of you that want the upsides of pre workout, without that possibility of messing with that part of your body that is responsible for filtering our toxins.
#1 Legion Pulse Pre Workout
This bad boy has a lot of online reviews, which alone speaks volume about how well it does when the weight in on the bar. Pre-workout without creatine or not, this is a quality product.
One of the only bad remarks that we have is related to taste, which speaks to the quality of results you will see. If the only bad thing you can say is that the taste is “not hitting the mark,” you are just looking to shoot a hole in a product. It comes in 5 flavors including blue raspberry, watermelon, green apple, fruit punch, and grape. Most of the negative reviews have to do with watermelon and grape. But, if you don’t like the taste there is a 90-day money back guarantee for this pre-workout without creatine. At a very low-cost per serving, and most people don’t take a whole serving, this is a quality buy with no risk to your body or wallet.
- All natural, no junk
- Naturally sweetened
- Money-back guarantee
- Not the best taste

#2 GAT Clinically Tested Nitraflex
First of all, GAT is general achievement test. That means these guys put their pre-workout in an open-label pilot clinical study against pre-workout without creatine and with creatine. People had to have been lifting weights for 3-10 years, after taking NITRAFLEX for 2 weeks they added 5-10 lbs to their max! Talk about crushing through some plateaus! Of the negative reviews, the majority are in January of 2015 due to a clumping problem that seems to have come from one mass shipment. But, since then nothing but positive reviews and killer results. That is an especially hard mark to hit when you offer your product in 8 flavors. The description and reviews lineup, this product is for the heavy lifters that need a boost for 2 weeks to reach that next level.
- Pina Colada flavor
- Can be too sweet for some
#3 Jacked Factory NITROSURGE
If you check out this product out you will see that it is a best seller.
Yes, a pre-workout without creatine is number one on the charts. The drawback is that it only comes in cherry limeade. For those of you that are looking to jump to a pre-workout without creatine, but are unsure of how it would compare, the general consensus is that this product is on par to any of the c4 products, we will see this company a little later in the article. That is high praise considering how well known the c4 brand is. For those of you who are not aware of this competitor, I will use the words of one reviewer. “A Gift from the Gods” and “High quality great value.” Which pretty much covers the spread of buyers who wrote the review right after taking it and after their workout of this pre-workout without creatine.
- Amplifies fat burning
- Great flavors
- Not the strongest
#4 Cellucor C4 Ripped pre-workout
A pre-workout without creatine that is C4 too!? I can feel some of your excitement right now. If C4 is putting this stuff out you know that it is legit.
Their pre-workout without creatine is actually outselling their pre-workout with creatine as both their products hold the #2 and #3 spot on the top selling products page. At a low-cost per serving, this stuff sounds almost too good to be true, but with a high rating, the results speak for themselves. Almost all of the reviews come from people that say that the product was too effective! Make sure that you start off at the half serving and move up not matter if you are just starting or are an avid gym goer. This is another pre-workout without creatine that only comes in cherry limeade, for those of you counting that makes two. So there must be something to this flavor.
- Clean focus
- May upset the stomach of some
#5 RARI Nutrition Infinity
It would stand to reason that someone that is vegan, gluten-free, or non-GMO would be worried about the negative effects of creatine. RARI nutrition, which is the name of the company, not another complicated acronym, brought this pre-workout without creatine to help out our health nut brethren that are looking for a good pump at the gym.
Coming in at a low cost per serving, it is surprisingly competitive for a pre-workout without creatine that is as health conscious as it is. However, it does fall victim to many of the short fallings of another vegan, gluten free, and non-GMO products like clumping and periodically underperforming batches. But, with a money back guarantee and lots of extra health-related upsides as compared to other pre-workout without creatine the gamble is definitely one worth taking. With flavors like Strawberry lemonade and blue raspberry that both have almost no reviews due to bad taste, the odds are in your favor.
- No shakes, jitters or crashing
- Great flavors
#6 BPI Sports 1.M.R Vortex
This pre-workout without creatine makes the lst for two reasons: 50 servings and flavors. They have 5 flavors including blue razz, blueberry lemon ice, sour watermelon, fruit punch, and, wait for it, snow cone. Not going to lie, I looked over all the reviews after I saw the price and the flavor snow cone. What does that even taste like!? But, once I returned to my better sense and dove back into the pre-workout without creatine research I found that Vortex has the most mixed reviews. People either love or hate it, for a variety of reasons. If you are short on cash, or feeling adventurous I would recommend this. Oddly enough there was a large number of reviews that showed that buyers over the age of 30 really enjoyed this product. There was at least 5 different reviews in a small space that said this pre-workout without creatine was perfect for them and getting them the results they wanted.
- Interesting flavors
- Not the best mixability
- Can be too sweet for some
#7 Evlution Nutrition ENGN SHRED
ENGN SHRED is pretty new to the market of pre-workout without creatine but carries a lot of positive reviews.
With flavors like blue raz, fruit punch, furious grape, and, you guessed it, cherry limeade they carry the industry standard for tastes. One thing that makes Evlution Nutrition stand out is that they routinely have positive feedback about their customer service, as well as the quality of their products. If you are in the market for a fat burner and a good pre-workout without creatine this would be a clear choice, as it has a mix of supplements that do just that.
- Thermogenic fat burning formula
- No crash
- Strong tingling sensation
#8 Six Star Pro Nutrition Elite Series
Most of the pre-workout without creatine on this list are powders, but Six Star has taken a different route with this product. Instead of mixing up powder in a shaker, worrying about your tub clumping, and which epically named flavor to choose, you simply just take a capsule and go on with your workout. But, with less than 100 reviews it is hard to pinpoint how effective these capsules will be. But, the price cannot be beaten, and with 60 capsules in each shipment, this has the opportunity to be an amazing value.
- Efficient pill format
- Awesome pump
#9 PRO SUPPS Mr. Hyde Cutz
To sum up Mr.Hyde cutz I will refer to one review that says “If you’re a stim junky, this isn’t for you.”
You may not believe it, however, there are people that don’t want to feel as though they have been lit on fire before they do their first set of the day. This pre-workout without creatine has been compared to the next step up from a cup of coffee. Most people in the review section say that they only take it on their sluggish days. This would be a good starter pre-workout for people to get a feel for the effect that these supplements have on your workout routine. If you are wading into the waters of gains Mr.Hyde cutz is a good place to start.
- Clean/focused state
- Not the strongest
#10 GenetX #1 Nitric Oxide
GenetX is a newer company, so this recommendation is more of a dark horse.
They are having great success with many of their products, and this one has the potential to be a good fit for new to mid-level lifters. With a staggering amount of reviews, there is little known about how this product is going to do, but this is an opportunity to get a quality product at a good price before the bandwagon effect sends it through the roof.
- No jitters
- Only one flavor
- Not the strongest
Don’t buy into the hype
At the end of the day, these supplements are all about getting you to the goals you have set for yourself at the gym. There are plenty of other pre-workouts on the market that contain creatine, but don’t buy into the hype. Just because it is one of the ingredients that shows up in almost all pre-workouts does not mean that it is effective, or more importantly, safe. Creatine has an estimated 2.7 billion dollars in estimated sales a year. Its financial success is in no way validated by science. It is easy to say that adding this stuff to pre-workout could have positive outcomes because of what it does in the human body, but correlation does not imply causation.
In short, creatine in small amounts will not have the same effect as creatine in large amounts. All scientists know is that is works in your brain and muscles, but its side effects are not well known. So why take the risk? There are plenty of other pre-workouts without creatine that have the same effects and are much more affordable. No use in spending money trying to build up your body only to put something in that has the potential to break it down over time.
Go and read the research, and start out small no matter what product you do choose. All pre-workouts come with a warning label and should be used as directed. This stuff is designed to help individuals get to the next level, and should be treated as such. But, using pre-workouts without creatine is a clear cut way to know that you are doing right by your body, and to ensure that those gains you make are not going to go right back out the window as soon as you stop.
Consider class dismissed, time to hit the gym and get those gains. Check back for more articles to keep up to date on the best supplements, we will do the research so you don’t have to. Happy lifting.
